How to calculate Final Gear Ratio?

For example, if your car has the following setting:

  • Motor Gear: 25
  • Spur Gear: 84
  • Pulley: 19
  • Gear Differential: 38
  •

Firstly, we need to calculate the 'Motor Gear to Spur Gear Ratio', divide 84 by 25 equal to 3.36. Then we need to calculate the 'Pulley to Gear Differential Ratio', divide 38 by 19 equal to 2. Finally, the 'Final Gear Ratio' is 3.36 x 2 = 6.72.

Motor Turn used based on Final Gear Ratio:

  • 3.5T: 9.5-10
  • 4.0T: 8.9-9.5
  • 8.5T: 6.4-7.0
  •

The above guideline is for reference only. The recommended motor turn may vary depending on different brands. More information can be found on motors' official websites.

Review from RC Driver, Issue 108, December 2012

  • In electric RC, the pinion gear is meshed with the spur gear and provides power to drive train. A quality pinion gear will provide maximum transfer of speed and power to the motor.
  • “I am a fan of precision manufactured, quality pinion gears that when properly meshed with a new or good spur are totally silent! These gears from Yeah Racing certainly fill the bill.” By Chris Kovachevich, RC Driver Issue 108, December 2012
